Question for you. As a Doctorow and Black Company fan, I'm curious whether you've drifted toward the "Old Man's War" series by John Scalzi. The guy does a great job mixing future thought with a healthy dose of wise-ass reality to his narrative -- while still keeping a solid military yarn moving through its paces. Hell, I'm not even a series fan, but I couldn't put down this set of smart, action-packed sci-fi books.
If you haven't picked them up from the library or Borders yet, I recommend the series: "Old Man's War", "The Ghost Brigades", "The Last Colony" and "The Sagan Diaries". I think you'll dig 'em.
Sounds interesting, I will have to check them out. Never heard of either the author or the books.
Scalzi's friends with Doctorow; he's always getting shout-outs on BoingBoing for his projects or web stuff (www.whatever.com). That's how I came across him, at least.
But yeah -- check your library for "Old Man's War" and see if it's your bag.
